'Tell me about your childhood,' the therapist says. It's a cliché but clichés exist for a reason - those early experiences shaped by our families and guardians lay the foundations of our adult character and behaviour. Without our knowing, the dynamics of our family of origin manifest in how we communicate, what makes us insecure, who we let into our personal worlds, and how we cope with adversity. None of us had a perfect childhood, and to that end we are all carrying around some number of behaviours that don't serve us - and may in fact be hurting us. But it doesn't have to be that way.
